Description
The 1931 (D) Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint as a cent in the Lincoln Wheat Cents 1909-1958 series. With a mintage of 4.5 million, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 18% of production. The obverse features Abraham Lincoln facing right, the first real person depicted on a U.S. circulating coin and the reverse displays two wheat stalks framing ONE CENT, symbolizing American agriculture. The 1931-S with a mintage of only 866,000 is a key date, struck during the depths of the Great Depression. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $9 to $87 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams, 19 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #2615.
