1930 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Visually dramatic among Buffalo Nickel varieties, DDR-001 of the 1930 issue creates the appearance of an extra left front leg and body on the buffalo through medium-spread eastward doubling. This bold displacement makes the variety easy to detect, as the doubled impression generates a distinct secondary leg outline visible without high magnification. Cross-referenced as FS-801 in the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Picker's Guide. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-111 and DMR-008, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows a die crack from the buffalo's head to the rim at early-to-mid die state with the obverse also at this stage, and Stage C in late die state awaits confirmation. The die crack in Stage B adds progressive deterioration to the already dramatic doubled leg effect. Struck at Philadelphia in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1930 Buffalo Nickel is part of James Earle Fraser's iconic design series running 1913 through 1938. The extra-leg visual effect makes DDR-001 one of the most recognizable Buffalo Nickel varieties.
