Description

Displaying light hub doubling spread to the south on E PLURIBUS UNUM, this 1929 Buffalo Nickel is the third documented doubled die reverse for the date. The southward spread means the doubled image appears below the primary lettering, creating a subtle shelf effect visible under magnification. Die markers UVC-242 and DMR-005 identify this die within the VarietyVista system. Three die states are documented: Stage A at early die state, Stage B at mid-die state, and Stage C at late die state. The 1929 Buffalo Nickel falls in the later years of the series (1913-1938). James Earle Fraser's distinctive design — a Native American portrait on the obverse and an American bison on the reverse — presents detailed high-relief surfaces that can reveal even subtle doubling under careful examination.
