The 1928 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is a United States Gold Quarter Eagle from the Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929 series — a late issue, 12th of 13 years in the series. In 1928, coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a combined mintage of 416,000. This represents the second-lowest annual mintage in the series, below the series median of 565,057. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. Philadelphia-only production. The denomination's final years coincided with economic excess. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Across its variants, estimated values range from $866 to $1.2K depending on mint mark, grade, and strike type. A notable auction result reached $19K in MS66 grade at Heritage Auctions.
