Description
The 1927 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle from the San Francisco Mint, belonging to the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.1 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 50% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. The 1927-D is one of the rarest regular-issue Saint-Gaudens with fewer than a dozen confirmed survivors. Coined at the San Francisco Mint, which transitioned from Gold Rush-era production to its modern role producing proof and collector issues. Estimated market value ranges from $14K to $57K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
