Description
Judd-2020, Pollock-2210, in proof format, is a presentation-quality striking of the 1922 Grant Memorial dollar pattern. This proof version is distinct from the business-strike J-2020, exhibiting the mirror fields and sharp frosted devices characteristic of proof manufacture. Proof pattern strikings served a dual purpose: they verified that the dies could produce the high-quality finish expected for presentation pieces, and they created specimens suitable for review by Mint officials and the Commission of Fine Arts. The Grant Memorial dollar program celebrated the centennial of President Grant's birth, and the commemorative series — designed by Laura Gardin Fraser — included both dollar and half dollar denominations in two varieties each (with and without a small star in the obverse field). This proof pattern provides insight into the quality standards applied to commemorative die preparation during the early classic commemorative era.
Rarity Notes
R-7 to R-8. Extremely rare. Proof pattern strikings of commemorative dollars are among the scarcest pattern categories.
