Description
The 1916 (D) Barber Quarter is a quarter minted at the Denver Mint, within the Barber Quarters 1892-1916 series. The U.S. Mint produced 6.5 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 79% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The final year of the Barber Quarter. A small number were struck early in 1916 before the Standing Liberty design replaced it. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $24 to $479 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5674.
