The 1914 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle from the San Francisco Mint, belonging to the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 1.5 million, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 73% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design that produced some of the most beautiful coins ever struck. Coined at the San Francisco Mint, which transitioned from Gold Rush-era production to its modern role producing proof and collector issues.
