Description
Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1913 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 34,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 6% of total production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Produced during the Progressive Era, when President Theodore Roosevelt championed a renaissance in American coin design that produced some of the most beautiful coins ever struck. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $5.1K to $8.5K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9163.
