(1913) Medal Wilson-Marshall Inauguration Bronze
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This bronze medal commemorates the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson as the twenty-eighth President of the United States, with Thomas R. Marshall as Vice President, in March 1913. Wilson, the former president of Princeton University and governor of New Jersey, won the 1912 election in a three-way race against incumbent William Howard Taft and former president Theodore Roosevelt, whose Bull Moose candidacy split the Republican vote. Presidential inauguration medals have been produced since the early republic, serving as commemorative souvenirs of the transfer of power and as collectible items documenting each new administration. The bronze (AE) composition was standard for broadly distributed inauguration medals, while presentation pieces for dignitaries were sometimes struck in silver or gold. The Wilson-Marshall inauguration medal documents one of the most consequential presidential transitions in American history, as Wilson's presidency would encompass the Federal Reserve Act, the income tax amendment, American entry into World War I, and the failed League of Nations campaign.
Rarity Notes
