Die clashes on early Lincoln Wheat Cents carry historical weight, and this 1912 Philadelphia issue preserves a reverse clash where the contour of Lincoln's head transferred into the field below the O of OF between the wheat stalks. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them — an event that can happen during normal press operation if the planchet feed mechanism fails to deliver a blank into the striking chamber. When the two dies collide face-to-face, each die receives an incuse impression of the opposite die's design, and those ghost impressions subsequently appear as raised artifacts on every coin struck from the clashed die until it is either retired or polished to remove the evidence. On this 1912 cent, the reverse die absorbed the back curve of Lincoln's head from the obverse die, leaving that profile contour visible in the field area below the OF inscription and between the two wheat stalks that flank the reverse design. The 1912 Philadelphia Mint produced 68,153,060 Lincoln cents in standard bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) — a moderate mintage for the early Wheat Cent era. Struck only three years after the design's 1909 debut, this coin represents an early-series clash that predates many of the die-maintenance protocols the Mint would refine in later decades. The clash impression is best observed under 5x to 10x magnification with lighting angled to cast shadows within the transferred profile outline, distinguishing it from die polish lines or other surface artifacts.
