Description
The 1911 (D) Indian Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Denver Mint, belonging to the Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929 series. With a mintage of 55,600, this is a scarce issue — the scarcer of two mint variants, with 7% of total production. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. The 1911-D (mintage 55,680) is the undisputed key date. The weak D mintmark is sometimes hard to distinguish. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $3.7K to $15K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7943.
