1910 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1910 1-cent WDDR-001, this Lincoln Wheat Cent reverse variety dates from just the second year of Victor David Brenner's iconic design, which debuted in 1909 as the first U.S. circulating coin bearing a president's portrait. Moderate extra thickness shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and both wheat ears and stems — elements dominating the reverse, where two wheat stalks frame ONE CENT and E PLURIBUS UNUM occupies the upper field. The moderate intensity produces noticeably broadened letter strokes and stem widths detectable at 5x to 7x magnification. The involvement of both wheat ears alongside the motto indicates the hub displacement affected a broad vertical band of the reverse die. No significant die markers were noted on either side, making the reverse extra thickness the primary attribution feature, and no cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The 1910 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at 3.11 grams. As a very early series issue, the 1910 carries numismatic significance beyond its variety status.
