Description
The 1909 (O) Barber Half Dollar is a half dollar from the New Orleans Mint, belonging to the Barber Half Dollars 1892-1915 series. With a mintage of 925,400, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 18% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Final year of New Orleans Mint half dollar production under the Barber design. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South. Estimated market value ranges from $57 to $2.4K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 30 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
