Description
Part of the Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929 series, the 1909 Indian Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint. With a mintage of 441,760, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. Second year of production. The incuse design attracted growing collector interest despite continued criticism. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $866 to $2.5K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7940.
