Description
The 1908 (S) St. Gaudens Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the St. Gaudens Double Eagles 1907-1933 series. With a mintage of 22,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features Liberty striding forward holding a torch and olive branch, with rays of sunlight behind her — widely considered the most beautiful U.S. coin design and the reverse displays a flying eagle with the rising sun behind it. Coins exist both "No Motto" and "With Motto" (IN GOD WE TRUST), creating a major type distinction after Congress mandated the motto's restoration. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $6.5K to $27K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge.
