Description
The 1908 (S) Indian Head Cent is a cent from the San Francisco Mint, belonging to the Indian Head Cents 1859-1909 series. With a mintage of 1.1 million, this is a scarce issue — the scarcer of two mint variants, with 3% of total production. The obverse features Liberty wearing a feathered headdress, often misidentified as a Native American — actually represents Liberty adorned with a chief's war bonnet and the reverse displays an oak wreath with a shield at the top, enclosing ONE CENT. First year of San Francisco production for the denomination, making the 1908-S a significant issue. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
