Description
The 1908 Indian Head Quarter Eagle was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Indian Head Quarter Eagles 1908-1929 series. The U.S. Mint produced 564,821 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features a Native American chief wearing a feathered headdress, designed in incuse (sunken) relief — a revolutionary departure from traditional raised relief coinage and the reverse displays a standing eagle on a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. First year of the incuse design. Critics attacked the sunken relief as unsanitary, but the coins entered circulation at Philadelphia. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $866 to $1.8K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7939.
