Description

This 1903 Indian Head cent exhibits an improper alloy mix, commonly known as a "woodgrain" or "woody" cent. The coin displays distinctive graining running from southeast to northwest on the obverse and from northwest to southeast on the reverse. This effect occurs when the copper and tin/zinc components of the bronze alloy are not thoroughly mixed during the ingot preparation process, creating visible streaks and laminations in the metal that become apparent after striking. The opposing grain directions on the obverse and reverse are characteristic of this error type.
