Description
Produced at the New Orleans Mint, the 1901 (O) Barber Quarter is part of the Barber Quarters 1892-1916 series. With a mintage of 1.6 million, this is a less common issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 15% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1901-S with a mintage of only 72,664 is the undisputed key date and one of the most valuable 20th-century coins. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South. Estimated market value ranges from $84 to $3.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
