Description
The 1900 Alaska Gold half-pinch half-penny, cataloged as X-Tn14, is a variant of the half-pinch denomination Alaska territorial token, distinguished from the X-Tn13 by differences in die design, composition, or other attributable characteristics. The existence of multiple X-Tn numbers for the same denomination and date indicates that different die varieties or production runs have been identified and separately cataloged within the territorial token numbering system. The proliferation of varieties among Alaska territorial tokens reflects the decentralized nature of token production in the territory. Unlike federal coinage produced at a single facility with standardized dies, Alaska tokens were manufactured by various private enterprises operating independently throughout the territory. Each issuer might use different die cutters, planchet suppliers, and production methods, resulting in identifiable varieties even among pieces of the same nominal denomination and date. The half-pinch denomination continued to serve the smallest transactions in Alaska's frontier economy at the turn of the twentieth century. The year 1900 saw continued gold mining activity throughout Alaska, with major operations at Nome (where gold was discovered on the beach in 1899, triggering a new rush), Fairbanks, and numerous smaller camps. Each mining district developed its own commercial infrastructure, and territorial tokens played a role in facilitating trade wherever federal coinage was insufficient.
Rarity Notes
Rare. The X-Tn14 variety may be scarcer than the X-Tn13, with approximately 10-20 known examples. Variety differentiation among Alaska tokens adds complexity and interest to the series.
