1899 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1899 25c WDDR-001), this 1899 Barber Quarter reverse doubled die carries Class II spreading toward the center across an unusually wide range of elements: USA, QUARTER DOLLAR, the arrow shafts, both wing tips, the left edge of the banner, and the eagle's legs. QUARTER additionally shows clockwise spreading while AMERICA shows counter-clockwise spreading. The upper letters of DOLLAR show approximately five close hubbings. Reverse die markers include two die scratches through the upper STA of STATES, a die crack from the right wing tip north into the rim above ST of STATES, and a die scratch from the top of the banner above BU of PLURIBUS running north toward a star. No obverse die markers were noted. This variety carries important historical context: it was formerly listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-25-1899-801 but was removed in the sixth edition when the piece was determined to be a die-struck counterfeit. Records are retained for educational purposes. The 1899 Barber Quarter was struck in 90% silver at Philadelphia.
