1898 HK-283b, Brass Trans-MS & Int'l Expo Dollar
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This commemorative so-called dollar (HK-283b) from 1898 celebrates Trans-MS & Int'l Expo. The 1907 Jamestown Tercentenary Exposition in Norfolk, Virginia commemorated the 300th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, generating commemorative medals and the Jamestown gold dollar. Struck in brass, this piece features the golden-yellow appearance that made the alloy popular for commemorative medals. Brass so-called dollars combine attractive visual appeal with good durability and detail retention. Miscellaneous national commemorative medals were produced by a wide range of manufacturers, from the U.S. Mint to local die-sinkers, covering subjects from presidential inaugurations to infrastructure milestones. Collectors of so-called dollars pursue pieces by exposition, metal type, engraver, geographic region, or historical theme, with complete sets of certain exposition groups being particularly prized accomplishments. This piece is a variant of HK-283, distinguished by differences in composition, die state, or striking characteristics that merit a separate catalog entry in the Hibler-Kappen reference.
Rarity Notes
Examples of HK-283b are common to moderately scarce among so-called dollar collectors. Gilded Age commemorative medals survive in varying numbers depending on original mintage and subsequent preservation. Variant types are generally scarcer than the primary issue.
