Description
The 1898 Barber Half Dollar represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Barber Half Dollars 1892-1915 series. With a mintage of 3.0 million, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 48% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $53 to $1.3K depending on grade and condition.
