Description
The 1897 Barber Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a quarter in the Barber Quarters 1892-1916 series. The U.S. Mint produced 8.1 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 81% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1897-S is a semi-key date. New Orleans production was modest this year. The Philadelphia Mint, America's oldest coin-making facility, has struck coins continuously since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $24 to $449 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
