Description
The 1897 Barber Half Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a half dollar in the Barber Half Dollars 1892-1915 series. With a mintage of 2.5 million, this is a less common issue — the highest mintage among 3 variants, accounting for 61% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1897-O with a mintage of 632,000 is a major semi-key date, scarce in all grades above Good. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $60 to $1.3K depending on grade and condition.
