1895 Indian Head Cent Die Clash

Among the die clash varieties attributed to the Indian Head cent series, this 1895 example displays transferred imagery on the obverse in front of Liberty's eye. The letter C from CENT and a portion of the adjacent wreath from the reverse die were impressed into the obverse field when the dies contacted each other without an intervening planchet. The C is the most prominently transferred element on the obverse because it occupies the highest relief point on the reverse die, creating the strongest impression during the clash event. This mechanical relationship — high-point reverse elements leaving the clearest marks on the obverse — is consistent with die clash theory and makes the C a reliable diagnostic for this variety. The wreath transfer, typically fainter, adds confirmation when examined under magnification. The severity of clash imagery varies with the force of the event, the number of clashes, and how aggressively the dies were subsequently polished. On this 1895 example the imagery survived post-event polishing and remains identifiable, making it a well-preserved specimen of the type.
