Description
The 1893 (S) Barber Half Dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint, is part of the Barber Half Dollars 1892-1915 collection. With a mintage of 740,000, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 19% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1893-S is a key date with low San Francisco mintage during the Panic of 1893. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage.
