Description

Part of the Seated Liberty Dimes 1837-1891 series, the 1891 (O) Seated Liberty Dime is a dime from the New Orleans Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 4.5 million examples, making this ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 20% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays an agricultural wreath enclosing the denomination (through 1859) or a wreath enclosing ONE DIME with the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (1860-1891). The final year of the Seated Liberty Dime, ending a run of over 50 years. Coined at the New Orleans Mint, which served the nation's southern economy from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their regional character.
