Description
The 1889 Liberty Head Nickel is a nickel minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Liberty Head Nickels 1883-1912 series. With a mintage of 15.9 million, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 100% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, surrounded by stars and the reverse displays a Roman numeral V (five) within a wreath of corn, cotton, and wheat. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $19 to $217 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #3850.
