Description
When obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, the resulting die clash transfers design elements from one die onto the face of the other — and this 1887 Indian Head cent displays the phenomenon on both sides with exceptional completeness. Most of the front of Liberty's feathered headdress portrait has been impressed onto the reverse die, creating a ghostly incuse image of the Indian Head profile visible among and around the wreath and denomination. On the obverse, the letter C from CENT has clashed in front of Liberty's eye, appearing as a raised letter fragment superimposed over the field where no design element belongs. The bilateral nature of this clash — affecting both obverse and reverse — indicates that the dies came together with sufficient force to transfer major design elements in both directions simultaneously, rather than producing the lighter single-side clashing that is more commonly encountered. Philadelphia struck 45,226,483 Indian Head cents in 1887, and die clashes are well documented across multiple die pairs for this date, suggesting that press operators may have been running production lines at speeds that increased the likelihood of misfeed events. James Barton Longacre's Indian Head design, with its prominent portrait relief and detailed wreath reverse, creates particularly dramatic clash impressions because the high-relief elements bite deeply into the opposing die surface. Full-portrait clashes like this example, where an extensive portion of the obverse design transfers to the reverse, are more visually striking and numismatically desirable than partial clashes affecting only isolated letters or design segments.
