Description
The 1885 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 800, this is an extremely rare issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 90% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Very low mintage at Philadelphia; the quarter eagle served gift-giving and numismatic markets. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.7K to $12K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7837.
