(1883) White Metal Medal GW-998, Holed Headquarters at Newburgh
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This white metal holed medal cataloged as GW-998 commemorates the headquarters at Newburgh, produced circa 1883. The standard (non-variant) GW-998 in white metal with hole represents the mass-market version of the Newburgh headquarters centennial medal, intended for participants in the 1883 celebrations at the historic site. The hole allowed the medal to be strung on a ribbon and worn visibly during the centennial observances, functioning as both a souvenir and a badge of participation. The Hasbrouck House had been preserved as a public historic site since 1850 — one of the first such preservation efforts in American history — and the 1883 centennial provided an occasion to celebrate both Washington's legacy and the pioneering preservation of his headquarters. White metal was the standard composition for affordable celebration medals, making this version the most widely distributed and accessible.
