1882 So-Called Dollar HK-139, Pennsylvania Bicentennial
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1882 so-called dollar (HK-139) commemorates Pennsylvania Bicentennial. Mardi Gras commemoratives from New Orleans, including pieces for the Rex parade, represent the festive side of regional medal production during this period. Struck in bronze, this piece showcases the detailed die work typical of American commemorative medals. Bronze's natural patina gives aged examples an appealing warm-brown surface that collectors prize. State and regional medals were typically commissioned by local committees and struck by private manufacturers. Silver and white metal compositions predominate. So-called dollars β defined as privately issued medals approximately the size of a silver dollar β encompass one of the most diverse and historically rich collecting fields in American numismatics. The production of commemorative medals at American expositions and celebrations followed a well-established pattern: event organizers commissioned designs from engravers, selected compositions and quantities, and distributed pieces through concession stands, subscription services, or direct sales.
Rarity Notes
Examples of HK-139 are scarce among so-called dollar collectors. Gilded Age commemorative medals survive in varying numbers depending on original mintage and subsequent preservation.
