Description
A Gold Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, the 1881 Liberty Head Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.9 million examples, making this the highest mintage among 4 variants, accounting for 79% of the year's production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. High mintage year; eagles served a growing economy during the early Gilded Age. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792.
