Description
The 1880 Nickel Three Cent Piece represents a Philadelphia Mint issue from the Nickel Three Cent Pieces 1865-1889 series. With a mintage of 21,000, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 84% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a Roman numeral III within a wreath. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $123 to $612 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 1.94 grams, 17.9 mm in diameter, with a plain edge.
