Description
This 1878 Indian Head Cent exhibits a die clash affecting both the obverse and reverse — a bilateral clash event where each die received transferred design elements from the opposing die when they struck together without a planchet between them. On the obverse, part of the C from CENT on the reverse is clashed in front of the Indian's eye, creating an incuse letter fragment in an area of the portrait where it contrasts sharply with the surrounding design. On the reverse, the nose and forehead of the Indian portrait are transferred below the C in CENT, and the neck is clashed above the O in ONE — multiple transfer points documenting the angular relationship between the two dies at the moment of the clash impact. This multi-point clash pattern, with design element transfers appearing in several distinct obverse and reverse locations, indicates a strong die-on-die impact with sufficient force to create clear impressions across widely separated areas of both die faces. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, featuring Liberty wearing a feathered headdress on the obverse and a wreath surrounding ONE CENT on the reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1878 in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 1878 Indian Head Cent had a mintage of approximately 5.8 million pieces. Die clash events on Indian Head Cents create particularly recognizable transferred elements because the portrait's facial features — nose, forehead, and eye area — produce distinctive curved lines when imprinted onto the reverse, and the large C of CENT creates a bold curved transfer on the obverse that is often visible without magnification on well-preserved specimens.
