Description
A Gold Quarter Eagle from the San Francisco Mint, the 1877 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle belongs to the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 35,400, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 96% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Gold coins re-entered broader circulation as the Resumption Act approached implementation. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
