Description
Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1876 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 5,000, this is an extremely rare issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 55% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Centennial year of American independence. Quarter eagle production was limited. Coined at the San Francisco Mint, which transitioned from Gold Rush-era production to its modern role producing proof and collector issues. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $11K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7825.
