Description

This white metal medal cataloged as GW-887 and HK-101 commemorates the Battle of Harlem Plains, produced circa 1876. The HK-101 designation identifies this piece in the Hibler-Kappen catalog of so-called dollars — medals approximately the size of a silver dollar that were popularly collected as dollar-sized souvenirs. The white metal composition (without the bronzed finish of PCGS #827248) provides a lighter, silvery appearance. The dual cataloging as both a Washington medal (GW-887) and a so-called dollar (HK-101) reflects the overlapping collecting specialties that encompass this piece. So-called dollar collectors seek the HK number while Washington medal collectors pursue the GW designation, giving this medal a broader collector base than either series alone. The Harlem Heights subject matter, combined with the popular so-called dollar format, made this one of the more widely collected pieces in the centennial battle series.
