Description
Issued by Traphagen, Hunter & Co. during the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, this brass token (NY-NY 860J) advertises an importer and wholesale dealer in toys, fancy goods, and fireworks operating from New York City, at 45 Park Place. A major NYC importing house specializing in toys, novelties, and fireworks that commissioned the largest number of die varieties among New York merchants. Multiple die varieties indicate the firm ordered tokens in batches over the exposition run. Brass striking was intended for higher-end distribution for premium customers. The brass composition gave this token an attractive golden appearance, distinguishing it from the more commonly encountered white metal and copper versions of this merchant's series. Created by Lingg & Bro., the firm that emerged as the indispensable manufacturer for Philadelphia merchants wanting token-based advertising during the Centennial.
