Description
Part of the Seated Liberty Quarters 1838-1891 series, the 1873 (S) Seated Liberty Quarter - Arrows is a quarter from the San Francisco Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 156,000 examples, making this ranked 5th of 6 mint variants by mintage, with 10% of production. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1873-CC "No Arrows" is a great rarity. Arrows returned to indicate a weight increase. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $134 to $5.6K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 6.3 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5493.
