Description
The 1873 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a Gold Quarter Eagle in the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 27,000, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 13% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Coinage Act of 1873 reformed U.S. coinage and demonetized silver, reinforcing the gold standard. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $8.1K depending on grade and condition.
