Description
The 1873 Liberty Head Half Eagle - Closed 3 is a Gold Half Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint, belonging to the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 series. With a mintage of 49,280, this is a scarce issue — ranked 3rd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 33% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Coinage Act of 1873 reformed U.S. coinage. Carson City half eagle production continued. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $1.4K to $4.2K depending on grade and condition.
