Description
The 1873 Liberty Gold Dollar - Open 3 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a Gold Dollar in the Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollars 1856-1889 series. With a mintage of 123,300, this is a less common issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 99% of production. The obverse features a female figure wearing a feathered headdress, representing Liberty in the guise of a Native American princess with a larger, more detailed head design and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing the denomination 1 DOLLAR. Open 3 and Close 3 varieties exist. The Coinage Act of 1873 continued the denomination. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $466 to $868 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 1.7 grams, 14.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7573.
