Description
The 1871 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a San Francisco Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 22,000, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 81% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Quarter eagles struck at Philadelphia and San Francisco during early Reconstruction. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $5.7K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7814.
