Description
The 1871 (CC) Liberty Head Half Eagle, struck at the Carson City Mint, is part of the Liberty Head Half Eagles 1839-1908 collection. With a mintage of 20,770, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 3 mint variants by mintage, with 42% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Carson City continued half eagle production alongside Philadelphia and San Francisco. Carson City's Nevada mint, active from 1870 to 1893, produced coins from Comstock Lode metal that rank among the most sought-after in U.S. numismatics. S. numismatics.
