Description

Completing the first group in this batch, J-966 strikes the coronet Liberty Head obverse with single-star headband and STANDARD wreath reverse in copper with a plain edge. As the rarest piece in its six-coin set, J-966 was produced in smaller quantities than its reeded-edge companion, a pattern occasionally observed in the 1870 series where plain-edge variants were treated as secondary specimens. The absence of edge reeding on the substantial copper planchet lends this piece an almost medallion-like quality distinct from the more coin-like reeded versions. Cataloged as PCGS #61212.

Rarity Notes
