Description
A plain-edge copper striking from the Seated Liberty obverse and regular eagle reverse dies, J-1005 was one of William Barber's more accessible dollar patterns and survives in somewhat greater numbers than many of its companions. The combination of copper composition and plain edge places this piece at the maximum distance from the production Seated Liberty dollar in both metal and edge treatment, making it the most obviously experimental entry in its immediate die-combination group. Copper dollar patterns from 1870 were among the specialty items available to collectors who knew the right sources at the Philadelphia Mint. Cataloged as PCGS #61252.
