Description

Completing Group 3, J-842 renders the three-star Liberty cap obverse and large Standard wreath reverse in aluminum with a plain edge. As the final variation in this six-piece subset, the coin represents one extreme of the compositional spectrum explored in 1870 — from traditional silver through copper to futuristic aluminum. The three-star cap design that Barber created for this die pairing never appeared on any production coinage, making these pattern strikings the only record of a design concept that existed solely within the experimental atmosphere of the Philadelphia Mint's die shop. Cataloged as PCGS #61086.
